About Us
Rakovník Museum was founded in 1898 and has been located since 1933 in the historic house of the Plasy Cistercians near the Prague Gate. The main building in Rakovník features permanent exhibitions, two galleries for temporary projects, a lecture hall, and an outdoor geological exhibition on the ramparts. The neighbouring Prague Gate is also included in the museum tour. The museum courtyard serves as a venue for regular cultural and social events.
The museum is currently undergoing renovation.
The town of Rakovník is also the seat of the institution, which has been named T. G. M. Rakovník Museum since 2003. It is a contributory organization of the Central Bohemian Region and manages the following museum sites in the Rakovník and Kladno districts: Rakovník Museum with the Prague Gate, Samson Café Gallery, High Gate, T. G. Masaryk Museum in Lány, Alice G. Masaryk and Red Cross Museum, Nové Strašecí Museum, Jesenice Regional Museum, Joachim Barrande Memorial, and the Jaroslav Fraňek Memorial Hall in Nezabudice.
In addition to long-term exhibitions, the main building offers two galleries for temporary exhibitions and a lecture hall with a capacity of 80 people. The tour also includes the Prague Gate and the outdoor geological exhibition on the ramparts, while the courtyard is used for cultural events. The administrative building, which houses the museum management, specialist departments, and the library, is located nearby but separate from the exhibition building.
