ABOUT THE HIGH GATE
The High Gate was built between 1518 and 1525 as part of the town’s fortifications. With a height of 46 metres, it formed the highest point of the defensive wall and served as the main defensive and control point of the northern part of the town. Its demanding construction involved renowned master builders Jan Chochola of Prague and Pavel of Louny. Since the 1980s, the gate has been open to the public during the summer season as a lookout tower administered by the museum.
EXHIBITION
The long-term exhibitions on the individual floors of the gate will undergo a major renovation during 2026. As with the museum’s main building near the Prague Gate, a completely new exhibition concept is being prepared for the High Gate as well. It will focus on the history and present-day activities of the Rakovník Sharpshooters’ Corps, reflecting modern approaches to museum presentation with an emphasis on timeless design and interactivity. The main attraction, however, remains the unique panoramic view of the town of Rakovník.
HIGH GATE EVENT
The symbolic opening of the town gates to tourists and visitors of Rakovník is marked by a full-day programme in Vysoká Street and around the museum building with exhibitions near the Prague Gate. The event includes a historical market, fencing, music, dance and theatre performances, art workshops for children at the High Gate, puppet shows, and period shooting ranges with a carousel.
This traditional town festival takes place every year on 8 May.
